Cargo Services (SIMEC Shaplands) Ltd comprises two subsidiary companies.
Wm Shapland & Sons Ltd
Acquired by the Cargo Services Group on the 1st October 1999.
It is the oldest surviving timber company in the City of Cardiff dating back to 1840.
It began business by importing pit props for the South Wales coal mining industry.
Today, Shaplands still imports timber mainly from the Baltic States of Estonia and Latvia on behalf of the local steel industry for storing and delivering its finished products.
It offers a bespoke service supplying all the required dunnage timber for export steel cargoes out of the South Wales Ports which involves traditional shipwright and tomming work, securing cargo with specially cut timber slivers, wedges and coil chocks from its mill based at Bird Port.
Shaplands also manufactures timber cases and export packaging as well as heavy duty base pallets for oversize and long length steel products.
Shaplands is a recognised supplier of heat treated timber to the steel industry. It has the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15) accreditation, approved by the United Kingdom Forestry Commission.
Tenershire Marine (Wales) Ltd
Provides a specialist cargo securing service throughout the United Kingdom, and in particular, specialises in lashing and securing of steel export cargoes as well as heavy lift and project cargoes.
It also undertakes cargo securing of machinery and steel cargoes within containers, as well as devanning services of imported goods from containers.
Among the workforce are qualified shipwrights who undertake tomming and securing of cargo with specially cut timbers.
